    The discriminatory policy of "don't ask, don't tell" (DADT) in the U.S. armed forces officially ended today. The repeal of this law is a victory for our national security and values, strengthening the ranks of our military at a time of war and advancing the causes that our nation stands for and our military fights for: freedom, opportunity and equality under the law.

    Congress enacted DADT in 1993, in an attempt to forge a middle ground between those who believed that gay Americans should be allowed to serve in our military and those who believed they should be banned from doing so. But the law effectively treated gay Americans as second-class citizens, denying our military their service based on their sexual orientation, not their capacity to fight in war.

    Super Bowl Sunday, 2010, was just the kind of day on which we might have let our guard down. At 11:17 a.m. a violent explosion, audible 30 miles away, tore apart the Kleen Energy Systems power plant in Middletown.

    An army of rescue teams, law enforcement officers and investigators from local, state, out-of-state and federal agencies rushed to the plant in a well-coordinated response. The fire quickly was brought under control, victims taken to hospitals and an initial determination was made that the explosion was an accident and not a terrorist attack.

    That quick, comprehensive and effective response would not have occurred before Sept. 11, 2001. Saving Medicare and Reducing our Debt


On June 28th, Senators Lieberman and Coburn revealed their bipartisan proposal to save Medicare and reduce the debt. The Lieberman/Coburn proposal would save more than $600 billion over 10 years, based on reviews of Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates, and up to an additional $100 billion savings from implementing the program integrity provisions.
