  • The Bond/Hutchison Report is Wrong

    06.24.10 at 5:15 PM

Senators Bond and Hutchison released a report yesterday which claims the American Power Act (APA) would force a gas tax on consumers. Unfortunately, the report is riddled with inaccuracies.

The premise of the report is that there will be no reduction at all in fuel use and that Energy Information Administration consumption estimates which assume a no-policy scenario will prevail. First, analysis shows the APA will reduce fuel imports by 40 percent by 2030, but beyond that, the bill makes significant investments in vehicle electrification and transportation fleet conversion to natural gas, both of which will significantly diminish petroleum consumption going forward.

The report claims the APA imposes a “new fee on transportation fuels.” That is inaccurate. Senators Lieberman and Kerry considered the fee concept and ultimately rejected it. Instead, the APA requires refiners to purchase allowances just like everyone else. There is no fee. The report equates th... Read More »

  • Who's the Enemy in the War on Terror?

    06.15.10 at 9:52 AM

The U.S. is at war with violent Islamist extremism, and the Obama administration does moderate Muslims no favor by refusing to recognize this.

    JOSEPH I. LIEBERMAN
    The Wall Street Journal
    JUNE 15, 2010

In the new National Security Strategy released by the White House last month, the Obama administration rightly reaffirms that America remains a nation at war. Unfortunately, it refuses to identify our enemy in this war as what it is: violent Islamist extremism.

This is more than semantics. As military strategists since Sun Tzu have appreciated, the first rule in war is to know your enemy so you can defeat it. The 2006 National Security Strategy did this: It correctly identified our enemy as "the transnational terrorists [who] exploit the proud religion of Islam to serve a violent political vision." The Obama administration removed those accurate and important words.

One argument administration officials use to defend their avoidance... Read More »

  • Lieberman Leads On 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

Connecticut senator key to repealing discriminatory Pentagon policy
    The Hartford Courant
    May 29, 2010

If President Barack Obama makes good on his promise to get rid of the odious policy that bars gay men and lesbians from serving openly in the military, Joe Lieberman will deserve some of the credit. He is among a handful of lawmakers taking the lead in the attempt to get Congress to repeal the statutory underpinning of the 17-year-old "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

The House voted for repeal Thursday night, and the full Senate soon will take up the issue.

"Don't ask, don't tell" has been responsible for cashiering about 13,000 servicemen and women who were ably serving their country. It has been an awful squandering of talent that the nation desperately needs.

The president, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, want to repeal the policy. The brakes have rightly been applied... Read More »

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
