Lieberman Co-Sponsors Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action Act
12.09.09
WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today joined Senators Kent Conrad (D-ND), Judd Gregg (R-NH), and twenty-four other Senators as a co-sponsor of the Bipartisan Task Force for Responsible Fiscal Action Act of 2009. The bill aims to address our national debt crisis by creating a bipartisan fiscal task force to make recommendations designed to quickly and effectively respond to our nation's long-term financial challenges.
"Like so many Americans, I am deeply alarmed by the magnitude of our mounting national debt," Senator Lieberman said. "Our debt problem represents the most pressing domestic crisis that our nation faces today. We can no longer simply talk about it- we must take immediate and serious action."
"In my view, responsible legislation to address these critical issues can be developed most effectively and swiftly outside the regular order of Congress," Lieberman continued. "The Bipartisan Fiscal Commission proposed in this bill would take a comprehensive look at our economy and make recommendations to restore fiscal stability and balance. Congress would have to take an up or down vote on those recommendations under expedited procedures."
Last month, Senator Lieberman joined twelve members in sending a letter to Leader Reid urging that any action to increase the debt ceiling should include a special process - such as the Bipartisan Task Force proposed in the legislation introduced today—to ensure that Congress and the Administration take actions to address our long-term fiscal imbalances.
