03.05.09
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today announced that the Federal Transit Administration has released more than $137.5 million to Connecticut for transit programs under the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act. Senator Lieberman was an active participant in the bipartisan negotiations that produced the votes to pass this timely economic stimulus legislation.
"This crucial infrastructure funding will create jobs and help keep our transportation system strong through the current economic downturn, increase existing capacity in key areas, while decreasing emissions and easing congestion by taking cars off the road," Senator Lieberman said.
The funds will be divided among transit programs in large urban areas ($101.4 million), aging railroad systems ($32 million), and rural areas, which will receive more than $4 million. The urban and rural expenditures will be overseen by the Connecticut Department of Transportation. In total, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act included more than $2.9 billion for the State of Connecticut.
