Lieberman Welcomes Announcement of $105 Million to Replace Amtrak Bridge

03.13.09

WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today issued the following statement praising Vice President Biden's announcement that $105 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funding will be used to replace the aging Amtrak drawbridge over the Niantic River:

"High speed intercity passenger rail is the key to a greener transportation future. These funds, coupled with other recent upgrades to Connecticut's rail infrastructure, will lead to greatly improved train service along the Northeast Corridor without hurting the flow of our marine traffic. Connecticut is an important transportation gateway, and I'm proud that more than 10 million passengers use the Northeast Corridor each year. The existing bridge lasted more than 100 years, and it is our hope that this one will last at least another 100."
