National Archives Outlines Challenges to Presidential Library System

WASHINGTON—A new analysis, "Report on Alternatives Models for Presidential Libraries," issued Tuesday outlines five alternative models to replace the current presidential library system.

The report, by the National Archives and Records Administration, was mandated by the Presidential Historical Records Preservation Act of 2008 [PL 110-404] and released by Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Chairman Joe Lieberman, ID-Conn., and Ranking Member Susan Collins, R-Me., with House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Edolphus Towns, D-N.Y.

The alternative models were proposed with the goal of reducing the financial burden on the federal government, improving the preservation of the presidential records, and reducing the time it takes for the public to receive access to presidential records.

The Subcommittee on Federal Financial Management, Government Information, Federal Services and International Security, chaired by Sen. Thomas Carper, D-Del., will be holding a hearing to follow up on the report's findings.
