LIEBERMAN SUPPORTS OBAMA PROPOSAL TO REDUCE SPENDING

01.26.10

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today expressed support for President Obama’s reported proposal to call for reduced spending on some domestic programs:

“I am heartened by the reports that President Obama is planning to call for a three-year freeze on non-security discretionary spending in his State of the Union address. This is a good first step by the President to begin getting our fiscal house in order.  However, if we are to truly address the growing national debt we must control the unsustainable cost of entitlements and consider tax reform. Although the Senate did not approve the Conrad Amendment, which would have created a statutory debt reduction commission, the proposal received more support than ever before.  Now, I hope the President moves forward to create a similar debt commission by executive order.  We cannot delay taking bold action to reduce the debt or else we will jeopardize our nation’s economic future.”

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
