LIEBERMAN STATEMENT ON THE RETIREMENT OF GENERAL JAMES JONES

10.08.10

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) today issued the following statement regarding President Obama’s announcement that General James Jones will resign as National Security Advisor and will be replaced by current Deputy National Security Advisor Tom Donilon:

“General Jones has served honorably as President Obama's National Security Advisor in a time of serious threat and great danger to our nation.  Throughout his long and distinguished service to the United States, both in and out of uniform, he has approached our most difficult challenges with principle, courage, and conviction.  I am deeply grateful to General Jones for his service.

“I also commend President Obama for his decision to appoint Tom Donilon as his new National Security Advisor. Tom has a deep and impressive grasp of the national security challenges facing America and his formidable skills will serve the President and our nation well.”

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
