Urges Congress To Pass Agreement And Defense Authorization Bill Before adjournment

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) issued the following statement today following the White House’s announcement of a compromise on taxes:

“I applaud President Obama and the Congressional leadership for agreeing on a compromise on taxes and moving our economy forward.  This tentative agreement is an example of Washington working across party lines to confront the challenges facing our nation.  I urge Congress to move quickly to pass this compromise that is critical to our economic security.  Then, before we go home for the holidays, Congress must pass the Defense Authorization bill which is essential to our troops and national security and would also repeal the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy that is unjust and harmful to our military effectiveness.”

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
