LIEBERMAN PRAISES OBAMA FOR ESTABLISHING NATIONAL COMMISSION ON FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY AND REFORM

02.18.10

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s decision to sign an executive order establishing the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform:

I am pleased that President Obama has moved quickly to fulfill the commitment made to a number of Senators to establish a bipartisan fiscal commission as a first critical step to regain control over the staggering national debt and annual budget deficits that threaten our economic stability.  I have long advocated a statutory commission, as it has become increasingly apparent that fiscal discipline is nearly impossible to enforce under the normal rules of Congress.  However, since Congress did not approve a statutory commission, I strongly commend the President for establishing the commission under the leadership of former Senator Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles.”

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
