LIEBERMAN PRAISES OBAMA FOR ESTABLISHING NATIONAL COMMISSION ON FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY AND REFORM
02.18.10
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) today issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s decision to sign an executive order establishing the bipartisan National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform:
“I am pleased that President Obama has moved quickly to fulfill the commitment made to a number of Senators to establish a bipartisan fiscal commission as a first critical step to regain control over the staggering national debt and annual budget deficits that threaten our economic stability. I have long advocated a statutory commission, as it has become increasingly apparent that fiscal discipline is nearly impossible to enforce under the normal rules of Congress. However, since Congress did not approve a statutory commission, I strongly commend the President for establishing the commission under the leadership of former Senator Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles.”
