DODD, LIEBERMAN, COURTNEY INTRODUCE RESOLUTION HONORING COAST GUARD ACADEMY

03.29.10

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (I-CT) and Representative Joe Courtney (CT-2) last week introduced Concurrent Resolutions congratulating the U.S. Coast Guard for its 100 years of operations in New London, Connecticut.  The Senate bill (S.CON.RES.56) is cosponsored by Senators Susan Collins (R-ME) and George LeMieux (R-FL). The House version (H.CON.RES.258) is cosponsored by 22 bipartisan members.

“For 100 years, Connecticut has proudly played host to the Coast Guard Corps of Cadets,” said Dodd.  “Throughout that time, the Academy has served not only as an exceptional institution of higher learning, but a place where our future military leaders have received critical lessons for keeping Americans safe and secure.  I salute the men and women of the Coast Guard, Academy faculty, staff and alumni for all of their accomplishments over the past century.”

“The Coast Guard has trained the men and women who protect our shores now for a hundred years in Connecticut," said Lieberman.  "We owe an immeasurable debt to all who those who have served in the Coast Guard, and I am honored to have this opportunity to congratulate the Academy on its first century of service.”

“Southeastern Connecticut is proud that the Coast Guard Academy has called our region home for the last 100 years,” said Courtney.  “From its humble beginnings at Fort Trumbull through today, the Academy has become an integral part of our history and legacy.  I thank Coast Guard officials and all those who have passed through the Academy’s doors for their service, and we are thankful for the opportunity to honor them through this resolution.”

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
