LIEBERMAN URGES "STRONG, UNEQUIVOCAL SUPPORT" FOR SOUTH KOREA AFTER NORTH KOREAN ATTACK
05.21.10
WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Joseph I. Lieberman (ID-CT) today called for strong, unequivocal support for South Korea in response to North Korea’s attack on the South Korean Ship Cheonan, which was sunk on March 26 with the loss of forty-six of her crew. Senator Lieberman issued his statement after an international investigation team—including South Korean, Australian, British, Swedish and U.S. experts—released a report earlier today detailing conclusive evidence that the Cheonan was sunk by a North Korean torpedo.
“It is clear that North Korea attacked and destroyed the Cheonan, killing forty-six of her crew,” Lieberman said. “The United States and our allies must now provide strong, unequivocal support to South Korea in response to this outrageous attack, and together formulate a firm, united, and coordinated response.
“We must also recognize that the way in which the United States, and the world, responds to the attack on the Cheonan in the days and weeks ahead will have extremely important strategic consequences far beyond Northeast Asia. This is a test of whether a rogue regime, hiding behind its nuclear arsenal, can attack a democratic ally of the United States with impunity. It is imperative that both our friends and our enemies understand that we will not allow that to happen.
“My prayers remain with the families and loved ones of the South Korean sailors who were killed and wounded in this attack.”
