LIEBERMAN HONORS ROBERT BYRD

06.28.10

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) today issued the following statement in memoriam of Senator Robert Byrd:

“I mourn the loss of a dear friend, colleague and a genuine American statesman who loved his country and the great institution of the United States Senate and served them both with honor. Day after day, Senator Byrd held forth on the floor of the Senate not just on the issues of the moment, but by providing an institutional and historical context for our deliberations. He was not just the President pro tempore of the Senate, he was also the Guardian of the Senate and our connection with the ‘mystic chords of memory.’  His  distinctive voice elevated our contemporary debates and tied our work to the history of humankind.  His knowledge of the Bible and of the classics  was extraordinary and moving.  Hadassah and I extend our condolences and prayers to Senator Byrd's family and to the people of West Virginia who were his larger family. I am grateful to have served with such a great man in the United States Senate and to have learned so much from him.”

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
