DODD, LIEBERMAN ANNOUNCE COMMITTEE APPROVAL OF OVER $54.5 MILLION FOR CONNECTICUT PROGRAMS

07.15.10

WASHINGTON, DC – The Senate Appropriations Committee today approved legislation that would provide $54,555,000 for several Connecticut initiatives, Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Joe Lieberman (ID-CT) announced.  Dodd and Lieberman worked with their Appropriations Committee colleagues to include funds for critical Connecticut projects in the appropriations bills that cover the Fiscal Year 2011 Military Construction, Veteran Affairs, and Related Agencies and the Agriculture, Rural Development, FDA, and Related Agencies bills.

"These bills invest in critical projects across Connecticut, including important new facilities for the Army National Guard and at SUBASE New London,” said Senator Dodd. “The Agriculture funding will provide the City of Bristol with resources to help prevent flooding, and protect the homes of residents along the Copper Brook channel. I will continue to work with Senator Lieberman and my colleagues in the Senate to provide Connecticut with resources that will put people back to work and strengthen our economy.”

“This funding will provide Connecticut’s National Guardsmen and submariners with the facilities they need to defend our state and our country,” said Senator Lieberman.  “Senator Dodd and I will fight to make sure that the final version of the bill includes this funding for our service members and the jobs that new construction will bring to Connecticut.”

The legislation will now go before the full Senate for consideration.  Below is a more detailed breakdown of the funds from which Connecticut stands to benefit.

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
