Funds Strengthen CT's Preparedness and Resilience to Emergencies

WASHINGTON—Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Joe Lieberman announced Thursday that Connecticut will receive $15,029,871 in federal homeland security grants. Preliminary totals for several of these grants were announced in December, and today’s announcement reflects the final allocation for the grants listed below.

“Given the current economic stress on state and local governments and the continuing threats to our homeland from homegrown and foreign terrorists, these grants are more crucial than ever,” Lieberman said. “I know Connecticut’s first responders will use this money effectively and efficiently to prepare for and prevent both everyday emergencies and catastrophic disasters.”

The $8.89 million Connecticut has been awarded from the State Homeland Security Program is the state’s largest homeland security grant this fiscal year, and will be used to address equipment, training and other preparedness needs across the state. In addition, the Bridgeport area will receive over $2.8 million from the Urban Area Security Initiative (UASI) grant program, and the Hartford region will get over $2.75 million in UASI grants.

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
