LIEBERMAN PRAISES NEW SANCTIONS ON NORTH KOREA

08.31.10

WASHINGTON, DC -- Senator Joseph I. Lieberman (ID-CT) today praised the joint announcement by the Department of State and Department of Treasury that new financial sanctions will be applied against North Korea:

“I strongly support the new actions taken by the Obama administration," said Senator Lieberman. "I am particularly encouraged that these new sanctions target individuals and entities that facilitate the North Korean regime's arms trafficking, procurement of luxury goods, money laundering, counterfeiting, and bulk cash smuggling.

"Targeting these activities -- which are the financial life blood of Kim Jong-Il's regime -- is a necessary and appropriate step in response to the sinking of the ROKS Cheonan and the broader threat of North Korean provocation and aggression, including its proliferation activities. Together with the ongoing joint exercises by the U.S. and ROK militaries, they send an unmistakable message to Pyongyang that acts of aggression will carry grave consequences."

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
