SENATORS PRAISE NEW U.S. TREASURY SANCTIONS ON GERMAN BANK

09.07.10

WASHINGTON, DC –Senators Joseph I. Lieberman (ID-CT) and Jon Kyl (R-AZ) issued the following joint statement today in response to the U.S. Treasury Department’s designation of Europäisch-Iranische Handelsbank AG (EIH Bank), a Iranian-owned bank based in Hamburg, Germany.

“We applaud the Treasury Department for imposing sanctions on EIH Bank, whose record of deceptive and illicit financial transactions in support of Iran’s nuclear and missile programs is well known. By targeting EIH, the U.S. Treasury deprives the Iranian regime of one of its last financial lifelines in Europe. It also sends a strong and important message to the world that business as usual with Iran is no longer acceptable. We hope that our German allies will soon take similar measures against EIH under their own national authorities.”

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
