LIEBERMAN STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF ARCTIC REFUGE LEGISLATION

02.17.12

WASHINGTON, DC-Senator Joe Lieberman (I-CT) made the following statement in response to House passage of legislation that would open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to harmful oil drilling.

“I am disappointed by the vote in the House to open the Arctic Refuge to drilling,” Lieberman said. “What is needed is a bi-partisan solution to the challenge of our crumbling infrastructure rather than the distraction of endangering this pristine national treasure. This is bad transportation policy and even worse environmental policy. When this measure is considered in the Senate, I am committed to thwart any threat to the Arctic Refuge.”

Lieberman has been a leading Senate opponent of opening up the Arctic Refuge for oil exploration since he first was elected in 1988. He has vigorously opposed every attempt by drilling supporters to open up the Arctic Refuge, including leading a successful filibuster of drilling legislation in 2002.

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
