Senators Introduce Resolution Ruling Out ‘Containment’ Strategy of Nuclear-Armed Iran

02.16.12

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A bipartisan group of thirty-two United States Senators today introduced the attached Sense of the Senate resolution that puts the Senate on record as ruling out a strategy of containment for a nuclear-armed Iran in the strongest and clearest terms, detailing why the consequences cannot be "contained" and must be prevented. For over two decades, the Iranian regime has defied its international obligations and engaged in a well-documented pattern of illicit and deceptive activities surrounding its nuclear program. Despite the increased sanctions put in place over the last several years by the United States and our international partners, the Iranian regime continues to push forward in its pursuit of a nuclear weapons capability. This resolution warns that time is limited to prevent this outcome and urges continued and increasing economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran until a permanent agreement has been reached verifying that Iran is in full and sustained compliance with its international obligations. By rejecting any policy that would rely on containment of a nuclear-weapons capable Iran, this bi-partisan resolution sends a clear message to Iran's rulers that the United States will stop them from acquiring nuclear weapons capability.

Senators U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), Joseph Lieberman (I-Connecticut), and Bob Casey (D-Pennsylvania), introduced the resolution with: Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), John McCain (R-AZ), Kay Bailey Hutchinson (R-TX), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Susan Collins (R-ME), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Bill Nelson (D-FL), Ben Nelson (D-NE) Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), John Cornyn (R-TX), Mark Pryor (D-AR), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Mark Udall (D-CO), Jim Risch (R-ID), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Scott Brown (R-MA), Chris Coons (D-DE), Dan Coats (R-IN), Rob Portman (R-OH), John Boozman (R-AR), John Hoeven (R-ND), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), Dean Heller (R-NV)

Senate Passes Postal Reform Bill

On April 25, the U.S. Senate Wednesday passed a strong, bipartisan postal reform bill to preserve the United States Postal Service (USPS) and put it on more solid financial ground for the future.  The 21st Century Postal Service Act (S.1789) was passed by a 62-37 vote.

“This legislation will change the USPS so it can stay alive throughout the 21st century to serve the people and businesses of this country," Lieberman said.
